A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

OLD AND NEW: Medina Healthcare System evolved from the original Medina Memorial
Hospital built in 1964 (top). Today’s hospital building was completed in 2009 (bottom).
Half of the nancing for the original
structure was arranged through the
federal Hill-Burton Act, and the other
half was from Medina County and city
of Hondo funds. e hospital opened
on February 23, 1964, on a 6.8-acre site
in southeast Hondo. e rst Board of
Managers included John H. Poerner,
chairman; Louis E. Hart, vice chairman;
William E. Berger, secretary/treasurer;
Robert Zuberbueler; Hilmar B. Haegelin;
Edgar Stiegler; and J. Travis Lilly.
Fi y years later, the Medina Healthcare
System carries on its mission to be the
provider of choice for area residents, led
by a seven-member Board of Directors.
The hospital has transitioned from a
rural community hospital to a network
of facilities and physicians including
Medina Regional Hospital; Rural Health
Clinics in Hondo, Devine and Castroville;
six family-practice physicians; two nurse
practitioners and two physician assistants;
and over 100 specialists who provide
medical and consulting services at these
facilities. Medina Healthcare System is a
major employer in the region, with over
230 employees.
INTERVIEW WITH THE CHAIRMAN
Board
Chairman Steve Hackebeil was appointed to
the Board in 1999 by the Medina County
Commissioners Court. Here he shares his
thoughts on the hospital’s 50th anniversary:
{
What are the biggest challenges
facing the hospital today?
}
I think our biggest challenge is
growing a countywide acknowledgment of
the services we have available now. For many
years, we could only o er a limited number
of services, and that’s a ected perception.
{
What services are offered now?
}
Over the last ve years, we’ve invested
heavily in our surgical, imaging and
emergency departments. We’ve recruited
great doctors in a wide variety of specialties
and brought themout here to serve residents.
We are transitioning to electronic medical
records. Our partnership with Methodist
has brought the Tele-Stroke Program to
our community, a lifesaving application of
advanced medical care when minutes count.
{
How do you like being chairman?
}
I’m honored to serve as the Board’s
chairman, and I’ll stay committed to this
hospital as long as the voters of Medina
County want me here. e aging experts
say it’s important to keep your mind active
as you get older, and there’s always lots of
change and new things to learn when it
comes to hospitals and healthcare.
The beautiful Hofmann Ranch in
Castroville, Texas, will be the site
of the charity gala on April 25.
